Taijutsu (open handed) and Bukiwaza (weapons)
A wide variety of techniques (joint locks, pins and throws) from various strikes and grabs are trained to embody fundamental martial principles. Over time the various techniques dissolve into effective self defense body learned reactions.
The integration of training with the Jo (wooden staff) and Bokken (wooden sword) are integral to the Iwama style of Aikido. Through the study of Aiki-Jo and Aiki-Ken the forms of taijutsu are enhanced, as many of the movements in taijutsu are reflected in bukiwaza, and vice versa.
Bokken (wooden sword) and Jo (wooden staff) are practiced as solo and as paired partner practices. Numerous principles including space, distance and timing are perfected through continued weapons training. The body is also strengthened and conditioned through weapons training.
The video below shows some old footage of Saito Sensei in the 1970's performing a whole host of Aikido techniques, both open-handed and weapons.
