About Aikido
Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art created by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). It's martial principles are fused with a vibrant philosophy that emphasises peaceful conflict resolution as the highest martial ideal. The founder formally established Aikido in the 1940's in the small rural town of Iwama in Japan. Through the fusion of Ju-Jitsu techniques with traditional weapons training and a strong philosophical foundation Ueshiba created a unique, modern martial art.

What is it?
The emphasis of Aikido is not to meet conflict and aggression with more of the same. Rather it strives to develop a strong physical presence combined with a confident attitude. The ultimate aim is to pacify aggression in a controlled and balanced way. Through the physical training many invaluable lessons are learned that we can draw upon in our daily lives. As our bodies become physically stronger and more flexible our minds become calmer and more centred, with increased concentration, resilience and will power.
Keiko - Training
Aikido training consists of both open-handed (tai-jitsu) and weapons (bukiwaza) training. Training begins with a short warmup and some conditioning exercises. Training then proceeds with a series of techniques being demonstrated, explained and the practiced. Uke initiates the attack, nage receives the attack and throws or neutralizes uke, uke receives the throw and takes ukemi.
